Screech Owl carved 3/4 sized out of Tupelo Wood with Special Tohickon Glass Eyes that I got down at the World’s in Ocean City, MD. The Primaries are inserts made out Holly. It’s a harder wood which lets me make them a little thinner than I normally do. The Driftwood I found on one of my bike rides this summer. As with all the pieces of driftwood that I use in my Carvings I’ve baked it for a couple of hours to dry it out and to make sure that there no bugs living in it. In thinking about making the branches out of metal I came across these Bonsai Wire trees instructions online. This is my first attempt with the wire trees and I’ve used them to create the illusion of an Cedar Evergreen tree. It’s not perfect but I think it adds to the whole composition of the piece. The Talons the Business end of the Owl which really differentiates it as a Bird of Prey, are made out of Copper wire. Getting the Talons to wrap around the branch in such a way that I can still take it off for painting was a little bit difficult. I must have started this carving about 10 years or more ago.
The Owl itself is 6” tall, the whole piece stands 23” tall & 14” wide.
This is the Carving that I painted in my set of Facebook Live videos on
Carving a Half Sized Screech Owl.
